Face lift

What it is
This is surgery which lifts and tightens the skin and muscles to give your face a smoother and more youthful appearance. There are several different types of surgery which you will need to discuss with your doctor before deciding which is most appropriate for you.

What it involves
This operation takes several hours and is done under full anaesthetic, or local with a sedative. The surgeon will usually make cuts in the hairline, remove excess skin and tissue and tighten the facial muscles. As well as possible complications from the procedure itself - such as excessive bleeding or infection, this also carries the risks associated with all major surgical procedures.

Questions to ask
Will I be scarred?
Yes, although initial scarring fades a lot during the first year.  Also, most scars are placed cleverly by the surgeon so as to be hidden by your hairline, or by natural creases/shadows.

How much time will I need off work?
If there are no complications you should be able to go back to work after a couple of weeks, although you might still have some bruising and swelling.

Things to look out for
You will usually be bandaged for four or five days after the op.

Smokers beware!  Most surgeons will ask you to stop smoking for a week or two before and after the surgery, as it stops your skin from healing properly.

Does it hurt?
Apparently not - there is usually only a little discomfort after surgery. Any extreme pain or swelling etc should be investigated immediately

Expect to pay

£3000 - £9000
