Cosmetic surgery goes low brow
6th February 2007

According to a recent survey, in a cosmetic surgery magazine, women are now opting for lower, rather than more arched eyebrows, as sported by the actress Jennifer Connelly.

American plastic surgeons, ticking off their checklists for perfection, say American actress Jennifer Connelly has the best eyebrow shape of the moment. It curves lower over the eye, reaching a peak height two-thirds of the way along. In contrast, the arched eyebrow favoured by Oscar winning actress Nicole Kidman is at its highest point in the middle. This gives a somewhat quizzical, wide-eyed look.

After years of patients asking them to make their eyebrows higher, they are noticing a profound change in taste. Cosmetic surgeons believe the high eyebrow - at its peak in the Hollywood stars of the 1930s and 40s before its current appearance - could soon disappear forever.

The research was published in the journal Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Its report said: "Great diversity exists among individuals with respect to eyebrow position and shape and the notion of an 'ideal' shape has changed quite significantly over the past several decades.
"Young people up to 29 years of age judge arched eyebrows to be unattractive and prefer the lower positioned eyebrow with a maximum in the lateral third.
"Because trends are generally introduced by young people and not by older individuals, it seems plausible to assume that the trend currently appears to be moving away from arched eyebrows."
