Spanish the biggest spenders on cosmetic surgery
26th February 2007

According to the Spanish Plastic Surgery Association, Spaniards spend over €800 million a year on cosmetic procedures.

According to the report, the average spend per person last year was €2,000, compared to less than £120 in the UK.

Breast enhancements are the most popular, and over 30,000 implants were sold last year in the Spanish market.

Around 20% of cosmetic surgery patients in Spain are men: they go for eyelid and abdominal surgery, and liposuction, which is also the second most popular operation with women.

David Mills, of Mills & Mills in Marbella, comments "Cosmetic surgery is very much a part of Spanish life; partly perhaps, because of the beautiful all year round climate makes outdoor and beach life very popular. The most popular procedures here are breast augmentation, liposuction and tummy tucks."

There are also a huge number of "cosmetic tourists" visiting from the UK, attracted by good hospitals, good weather and competitive prices. For further information, see our Sun, Sea and Surgery feature.
